That depends on how much of an RTS player you are. Do you see much of the competitive scene? I can tell you than in no way is the RTS genre dying, but most casual gamers avoid it. RTS, in its very nature, requires people to think. Most gamers don't think. They run around shooting people. And I'm talking about real strategy, by the way. Given FPS games do require strategy but it's very different.
If you're looking for excellent RTS games here's a few to get you going: - Company of Heroes (Opposing Fronts standalone expansion is great as well) - Battle for Middle Earth 2 - Supreme Commander
I hesitate to scratch out BfME 2 because it really doesn't belong up there with the other two games, but it's still quite good. My personal opinion is that BfME 1 is far more balanced and has better gameplay, and it's cheaper. The deciding factor for most people tends to be graphics, though, so I put up BfME 2. If you're actually into RTS though, go with the first game.
While I've barely played SupCom at all I can tell you it's well balanced and very strategical. Excellent RTS by all standards, although it isn't that popular.
Company of Heroes is, in my opnion, one of the greatest RTS titles ever. Balance is excellent (always a few bugs though) and gameplay is beautiful. The depth to this game is by far the most complex I've ever seen in an RTS, and the action is faster than most games as well. I would highly reccomend you pick this game up and play it. The Opposing Fronts standalone expansion is awesome as well, but I haven't played it a whole lot. But from a guy on the inside of the competitive community I can tell you that it's pretty good. It has more balance issues than the vanilla version though. You shouldn't be able to notice that in a LAN party though.
So no, RTS isn't dying. I don't play CnC3 but I know with patch 1.09 it's supposed to be awesome. Other than that, I don't know many games that would be worth your time. Universe at War is pathetic, so don't go near it, and Starcraft 2 looks pretty amazing.
